Sentinel events
To monitor the HIV epidemic on an individual level and longitudinally, selection of sentinel events occurring in the continuum of care of PLHIV (People Living with HIV) is necessary. Sentinel events are selected based on the country’s needs, current data management systems and resources. They can be updated as systems and/or needs evolve. Kenya has selected the following sentinel events for its HIV CBS system.
- HIV Diagnosis – Earliest date of HIV diagnosis determined according to the current national HIV testing algorithm.
- Enrolment into care – Date that any case of HIV is registered into clinical care.
- First and all CD4 counts – The earliest CD4 test and results (percentage or count) available and subsequent CD4 tests and their results.
- ART initiation – Date on which ART is first prescribed.
- First and all viral load test results – All viral load test results either baseline, routine or targeted follow up.
- ART regimen changes – Date on which ART regimen is changed from first-line, second or third-line.
- Death – Date of death reported in any case of HIV, regardless of the cause of death.
